The Short Girl And The Maxi Dress

The maxi dress is in this  season and looks great  on a  tall willowy figure  but  short  girls don’t worry  the maxi can be for you too. I  am 5 “2”  and  have been a fan of the maxi dress in or out of season. I  have struggled  over the years to  find the  right one and I have made some grave mistakes  ( Ladies if you short  a bold large print  ruffled maxi dress is  not for you …take it from me )

Based on  my long love affair  with this  style of dress I can now say I know the perfect maxi dress  for the  girl  that is  5feet and  under.

Colour  – A solid colour is your best friend ( if  you go print  go small  geometric ….stay away from the floral )

Cut -    Straight  , A line  or bias . Get  a V-neck halter it makes your breast look  great and your neck longer  giving  the impression  that  you are taller  than you actually are . The empire waste  will  do  the same thing.

Fit -  dress  should skim  the  body  but not be fitted, skim breast and butt  and  then fall  all the way down.  I  like to call the maxi dress  “ the teaser”  if  gives  glimpses of all the right things  but keeps  you fully  covered

Length - If  you are under f feet  I would recommend that the dress  falls  a few inches  below the ankle and here is  why .  If  you are  under 5 feet  I strongly  recommend  wearing wedges  with you maxi …  not only does it give you added height  but it gives  you a sexy  sophisticated strut  as well. Also   if the dress  is too long it  diminishes the  illusion of height, which we are trying to create,  and  it kills  the sexy .

DRESSING UP THE MAXI

The  maxi is a lot of  dress  so  we want to  showcase the dress and keep  the accessories  at a minimum .

Feet – MUST  go with wedges. Ladies if you are short  flats will only make you look  shorter .

Shoulders -   I  say go  Big  with the Bag …. Not too  big  if you are short and  thin.

Hands -  I say  cocktail  ring  or bangles  but NOT  both

Neck and Ears -   long or chunky necklace  or huge loop earring  ( if  you go with the earrings  forgo  the necklace and  do killer makeup .

Suggestions  above are based solely on my experimentation  with the maxi  you can follow  or  have fun  experimenting .

Jamaican Makes Faces in Prague, Czech Republic

As I was surfing the web today I came across a site called The Looks    based in Prague, Czech Republic. was looking at the  work thinking this is cool stuff  then  I clicked on the about page  imagine my surprise (and great joy) when I found  put the work I was  looking at  was done by Jamaican  Serena Stephen. My initial delight was followed by a sense of sadness that  we lost another creative spirit  because we have imprisoned our creativity  and have become so caught up  fitting into these molds define by society.

It is my hope  the  we never have to loose  another stylist or makeup artist lets be bold and not only embrace or local creative talent  but our own inner creativity .  Serena  come  home soon your work would be an great addition to  the growing local fashion scene .

Fashion on the Rise

I came across a blog today called ‘Plaids and Stripes’ by Bianca of “Peace-is of Bianca” and the first line of her blog description really caught my attention
Fashion in Jamaica and the region exist, much to my annoyance, almost outside of an international aesthetic.”

Her descriptor put words to what I have been feeling about the Jamaican fashion scene for a while. Yet, I have seen the work of some of our local make-up artists, stylists, like Dexter3DPottinger jewelry designers like Bianca, photographers like Marvin Bartley (you will go crazy when you see his work) clothing designers Drenna Luna, and we have produced models who have done great
Bianca                                                                                                             Dexter 3D Pottinger
work for famous international designers and graced the covers of major magazines like Vogue as well as coveted Victoria Secret campaigns (can someone say SAINT). Why then isn’t the math adding up?  The way I see it, great clothes, great make-upartists and stylists and great bodies to hang the clothes on ever greater faces to be made up should equal a fashion mecca for the Caribbean, and by Fashion I mean creative expression and sheer “fabulosity”. Allowing your mood and your likes to direct your fashion choices and not one of the Girls from “ The City” or one of the Atlanta Housewives… Mix those fabrics, mix those colours and pattern take a risk.

Marvin Bartley
The only conclusion left for me to draw is that the general Jamaican population is creatively constipated (this might also explain the quality of our adverts but that’s another story). If this was not the case, walking in New Kingston and Half Way Tree should be equivalent to walking through the streets of London or New York where creativity reigns free in the form of dress on the everyday man woman and child and in some cases even dogs. (By dogs I do mean the actual animal J )

Here’s to all our local creative designers who take it one outfit at a time, one face at a time, one picture at a time, to release our people from their creative constipation
